LOCAL BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT:  LA LECHE LEAGUE

Picture
La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization created in 1956 by seven mothers. Today it is the world's leading breastfeeding support organization where Leaders are mothers who have breastfed their babies and gone on to receive additional training in how to help support other mothers who wish to breastfeed.  LLL encourages women to attend meetings during their third trimester of pregnancy.

For free breastfeeding help or information, call or email a Leader near you or attend a monthly meeting. For more complicated problems, a LLL Leader can refer you to an IBCLC (see further down).

INTERNATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED LACTATION CONSULTANTS (IBCLC)

Picture
When I thought everything was falling apart, and we were never going to get breastfeeding right, Stacie brought me a lactation consultant, and things just got better from there." Sage's mom
IBCLCs are often called "the gold standard" of breastfeeding helpers. IBCLCs in private practice all have their own fees and policies; when you are having breastfeeding difficulties and the thought of paying for help seems out of your budget, know that these women are trained and educated in ways to help you and your baby overcome the challenges that might make breastfeeding seem impossible.

Doulas

Hiring a doula was the best decision we made. It turned out to be way more important than what color we painted the nursery, what kind of crib we got, or cloth or disposable diapers. Stacie helped us so much the day Joshua was born. Whoever you are, wherever you are, unless you have had 16 kids, your mom's a midwife, and your husband's an obstetrician, you need a doula (and maybe even if that does describe you, you need a doula!). A happy & proud Dad
