Birth Classes for Busy Families: All Classes are Currently Offered Virtually

Early Pregnancy Class

Picture
You feel so excited to be pregnant! And maybe a little sick? Your provider usually isn't ready to see you until you're 12 weeks -- if you even know what provider you want! What do you do until then? Try this Early Pregnancy Class. Topics addressed are: feeling good, exercise and fitness, sexual health, choosing a provider/place of birth, and more.

Who takes this class? Most often first-time parents sign up for the EPC class, but those families who experience a large space of time between pregnancies also enjoy the information presented.

Early Pregnancy Class: $100

SOLVING A PROBLEM
Get Smart, Baby! is your solution to the modern childbirth education crisis! What's the crisis, you might ask?
  • classes are boring
  • life is busy

ENTER GET SMART, BABY!
  • private birth classes
  • built on what you already know
  • you don't have to leave your house
  • scheduled around your life activities
  • engaging + evidence-based + humorous
  • fast-tracked -- because you have more important things to do!

TOPICS COVERED ARE...?
  • stages + phases of labor
  • pain theories + comfort measures
  • interventions + choices
  • birth planning + communication
  • comprehensive breastfeeding + /chestfeeding
  • postpartum expectations for parent, baby + family

GET SMART, BABY! is appropriate whether you are birthing in a forest surrounded by baby deer and a midwife, or you are having a planned cesarean birth in the hospital -- and everything in between. I fully trust your choices as it is your birth, after all! Combine forces with friends who also need a childbirth class and we make it a group plus knock off some of that class fee. If there are two pregnant people, you each pay $155; three pregnant people, you each pay $140.

Comprehensive class: $165

BREASTFEEDING CLASS

Picture
In this 2-hour class your questions are always answered, and we discuss the traditional aspects of breastfeeding (different holds, frequency, etc.), as well as look into the ways biological nursing can be an easy alternative for both parent and baby.  Other topics covered include:

  • How milk is made
  • How to nurse comfortably
  • Positioning baby at the breast, including laid-back breastfeeding
  • Learning what’s normal and what needs attention, including common myths of breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding resources and referrals
  • How partners can help and be involved
  • Pumping, storing milk, and returning to work/school

Most of this information is included in my Lamaze Childbirth Education; doula clients receive some of this information as part of our prenatal visits. This class can also be extended into a 3-hour session that satisfies the DONA-certification requirements for new doulas.

Breastfeeding Class:  $100

BIRTH PLAN BRAINSTORM

Picture
You need to know your options in a non-biased, organized way to apply them to your beliefs and situation. A birth plan can help you format your ideas and goals into a readable, understandable tool to share with your birth team. Included in this session are ways to communicate with your care giver, non-traditional birth plan ideas, and strategies to make your birth plan engaging, increasing odds it will be honored. This session provides a multi-pronged approach:
  • We meet together to learn about options pertaining to your unique pregnancy and birth
  • I help you craft your birth plan and leave you with a document to share with your medical provider
  • Via phone and email, we keep a dialogue going, ensuring changes are made according to Shared Decision Making
  • You have a final product to pack in your birth bag

Birth Plan Brainstorm takes about 2 hours of in-person time, plus the communication required to polish up your final product.

Birth Plan Brainstorm: $100

BELLYCASTING

Picture
Bellycasting is a way to remember your beautiful baby belly! Often families hang them in the baby's nursery, and they enjoy taking pictures of their new baby laying inside the cast -- to see their little one's first home. I come to your house with all the supplies needed to cast your breasts and belly. I can offer suggestions on how to further preserve and hang your cast. This can be fun for the whole family, and it is also a great baby shower activity (modest means can be taken if mom wishes others to help in this project). Mom, or any resident artist, can decorate the cast, or it can be left as it is.

A session lasts about 60 minutes. The only thing you provide is an impressive belly, and perhaps a few helping hands, if you wish (although not necessary). Belly casts are best done close to the due date, between 8 and 9 months.

Bellycasting: $100
